Vegemite Not So Good-Australia Post By Easton

Whether you are an Aussie or a visitor there is so much to do in Australia. But the problem is it might look small on a map but it is like Canada but worse with everything being spread out and any tours and activities are very expensive. With us starting in Sydney and driving up the coast to Cairns then flying to Alice Springs and Darwin I got to see and do more than a usual person. The activities we did were so much fun. The most memorable and fun activities were snorkeling, surfing, Fraser Island, the Outback, riding camels and Litchfield.

My two favorite activities were snorkeling and surfing. I loved snorkeling because seeing the Great Barrier Reef was so amazing and relaxing. The fish and coral come in so many different colours, shapes and sizes and you get to see different types that you have never seen before. There are fish as big as me and as small as my fingers and they swim right up to you. Snorkelling is quite easy and relaxing and a trip to the Great Barrier Reef was well worth it.

I loved surfing because it looks really hard but is quite easy if you get the right teacher. Our teacher Gaz was supposed to be one of the best in Australia (according to the Danny the Quicksilver Pro we met in Byron Bay), so he taught us the right techniques. We ended up doing lessons twice and went surfing on our own once. I tried long boards and short fiberglass ones which are harder. Surfing is so fun and you can get hooked on it like I did.

Fraser Island is a World Heritage site because it is the largest sand island in the world. All of the sand is from the mainland of Australia. I liked Fraser Island because there is so much to see such as McKenzie Lake, the Maheno shipwreck, The Pinnacles, Eli Creek and other freshwater lakes and streams. It is really cool to see Dingos but they can be very dangerous so you have to be very careful around them. The ride in the 4x4 was so bumpy like an awesome roller coaster. It was worth the one hour boat ride to Fraser Island and it was a nice ride anyways:)

Since Australia is so big that when we got to Cairns we flew to Alice Springs. From Alice Springs we took a three day tour called The Rock Tour out to the middle of nowhere. We saw King's Canyon where did a four hour hike and Kata Tjuta where we did a 5km hike. We also got to see Uluru (Ayers Rock) where we did a 9km walk around the bottom of it. I didn't get to climb it as it is disrespectful to climb it but I understand that. Even though I didn't get to climb Uluru I was so amazed. It is crazy big and unlike Kata Tjuta it is one humongous rock. The Outback, the canyon, Kata Tjuta and Uluru are all amazing and are worth the very long hours of driving.

In the Outback we also got to go Camel riding. I liked camel riding because you would think it would be like riding a horse but it is way different. Horse riding is fun but camel riding is awesome fun! Since camels are so tall, they rock back and forth allot when they stand up and lay down, and if you do not lean way back you will fall of. Even though we didn't get a long ride it was a lot of fun to try. I would totally do it again.

Litchfield National Park and the Jumping Crocodile Cruise were very cool. Some of the largest crocodiles are in the Adelaide River; both freshwater and saltwater ones. On the cruise they hang meat over the side of the boat and the crocodiles jump out of the water for it, the sea eagles would also come snatch the meat also which was so cool. At Litchfield it was so nice and refreshing because it was so hot and we got to swim in different spots. My favorite spot was at Florence Falls where I had to swim super hard to get behind the falls but it was amazing under it. There is one area we couldn't swim at since it was closed because the river was high and the saltwater crocodiles can make it upstream and they are extremely dangerous. They say the freshwater ones like fish and won't bug you and that they are in the area all the time. Litchfield was so cool.

Australia was great especially the beaches. I would love to come back. The only thing I did not like about Australia was vegemite. Aussie's like it but it has a really weird taste and it's just like dumping a full container of salt on you're toast. Talk to you from the land of rice.

Thanks for the great post, Easton!
Creepy picture of the crocodile. I'm glad you kept your hands inside the boat!
You sound like you're loving everything (except vegemite...can't blame ya!). Keep exploring!
Looking forward to you teaching us about Vietnam.
