The Inca Trail

We did it!! We survived our 45 kilometer trek through the Andes mountains to reach the Incan city of Machu Picchu.

Over four days we passed through some of the most magnificent scenery we have ever seen; encountering beautiful Incan ruins, looking out over glaciers, tramping through tropical forests and walking through clouds (which the kids thought was pretty cool). With this beauty a price was to be paid as we encountered many different weathers which posed a problem for dry warm feet and clothes at times and are currently dealing with bug bites. Each day we were expected to be up at a certain time to get a start on the day's adventure and that ranged from 3:30am to 6:00am but no one ever seemed to grumble. The girls also seemed to have an issue with the "facilities" on the trek as they were much used holes in the ground. The most difficult day was the second one where we trekked 16kms over two passes, one of which was called Dead Woman's Pass at 4200 meters above sea level (for comparison Banff is at 1383 meters).

The kids did fantastic and actually led the group and pushed our guide and group to keep up. At our pre trek orientation you could see many worried faces of the twenty year old backpackers when we rolled in with a 12 and 9 year old but by the end of trip they had nicknamed the kids "The Incredibles". Dead Woman's Pass was to take us up to 2 hours to reach the summit and both kids completed the task in just under an hour and then proceeded to encourage the rest of group up the incline. They were the only two children on the trail and were well recognized by the other tour groups by the end as well, they also had native Andean women commenting to our guide on how impressed they were which was very cool.

Aside from some very stiff legs we had a blast and would highly recommend this trek to anyone. We did our hike though a local company called Llama
Path (www.llamapath.com) who provided us some fantastic memories, a lot of new friends and a lot of knowledge regarding the very impressive Incan culture.

We head back to Lima today for a few days before having to leave Peru. We definitely love Peru and unfortunately don't have more time to see more of this beautiful country.

We will be back soon with both children's blogs on their impressions of Peru. Bye for now!
